This workshop will teach you the foundations and techniques required to make your own signature pair of carved, wooden earrings. Through the creation of your own sculpted forms and metal findings, we will explore different ways of creating your own designs in wood and metal. Participants can expect to leave the weekend with at least one pair of finished and unique earrings to take and wear with them. We will be working primarily in hard-woods and making silver and copper ear-posts, wires, and hooks. This workshop is designed for all levels, from beginners to advanced metalsmiths; everyone will be encouraged to push their creativity and skills in the creation of their own works.

Workshops run from 9:00am to 5:00pm each day

Workshop Levels

Definitions of Skill Levels for Workshops

  • Beginner and Beyond: Introductory level course that presents basic knowledge of tools, materials and techniques and is geared towards first timers or those who want to improve and expand their technique. It takes time to build skills.
  • Advanced Beginner and Beyond: Instruction that assumes some familiarity with tools, materials and equipment. Includes reviews and builds on basic skill sets, allows for those with more experience to work at their own pace. Further development of fundamentals, participants have had at least one class or equivalent with professional instruction.
  • Intermediate: Course content that assumes a working knowledge of basic studio tools, materials and equipment necessary to accomplish the projects and techniques to be explored. Participants feel comfortable in the studio setting.
  • Intermediate to Advanced: Course content that requires a proficient working knowledge of studio tools, materials and equipment necessary to accomplish the projects and techniques to be explored in class.
  • Advanced: Assumes proficiency and advanced working knowledge of materials and studio tools and equipment so that the focus is on artistic narrative and/or technical development.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

Steven KP

Steven KP is an artist, jeweler, and educator based in Providence, Rhode Island. Currently a Visiting Assistant Professor at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design, KP received their MFA in Jewelry and Metalsmithing from the Rhode Island School of Design and holds a BFA from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. KP’s studio practice is centered around investigations of empathy, material culture, and queer experience. KP is a 2017 Windgate Fellow awarded by the Center for Craft, Asheville, NC USA and a winner of the 2020 Marzee Prize from Gallerie Marzee in Nijmegen, NL. KP’s work is represented nationally at Gallery Loupe in Montclair, NJ
