Making a Windsor arm chair, rocker or settee will be a highlight of your summer. The project will be broken into many smaller steps to make it surprisingly doable over three days. This course is designed for anyone from beginning to advanced skill levels ready to work with a variety of hand tools to make a family heirloom.  Projects will be well-engineered, very comfortable and artful. A mix of woods will be available for your project such as Cherry, Walnut, Pine, Poplar, Oak, or Ambrosia Maple. This workshop can be taken alone or in combination with the previous workshop featuring other Windsor furniture pieces.

Projects vary in price and must be chosen and paid for prior to the start of the workshop. Pricing for projects is as follows:

Level: Beginner and Beyond
Workshop Levels

Definitions of Skill Levels for Workshops

  • Beginner and Beyond: Introductory level course that presents basic knowledge of tools, materials and techniques and is geared towards first timers or those who want to improve and expand their technique. It takes time to build skills.
  • Advanced Beginner and Beyond: Instruction that assumes some familiarity with tools, materials and equipment. Includes reviews and builds on basic skill sets, allows for those with more experience to work at their own pace. Further development of fundamentals, participants have had at least one class or equivalent with professional instruction.
  • Intermediate: Course content that assumes a working knowledge of basic studio tools, materials and equipment necessary to accomplish the projects and techniques to be explored. Participants feel comfortable in the studio setting.
  • Intermediate to Advanced: Course content that requires a proficient working knowledge of studio tools, materials and equipment necessary to accomplish the projects and techniques to be explored in class.
  • Advanced: Assumes proficiency and advanced working knowledge of materials and studio tools and equipment so that the focus is on artistic narrative and/or technical development.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

David Abeel

David Abeel, a woodworker from Traverse City, Michigan, recently retired from a 40 year career running human service agencies so he could work seven days per week doing what he loves most, making Windsor furniture. He teaches chair making classes in Michigan and five other states at folk schools, arts centers and community colleges. David has a Master’s Degree in Social Work from the University of Washington.
