Come create a wearable metal piece/object that will be designed and executed with the intention of Powder Coating the object during the end of the creation process. Participants will be given demonstrations that will educate them on the wonders of powder coating metal, and be given time to create samples along with their finished product. The goal will be to have everyone create a vibrantly colored object, and exit the workshop with a solid understanding of how Powder Coating can be incorporated into their creative practice, and safely execute this process from home! Participants should have basic jewelry fabrication skills such as metal piercing, filing, sanding, as well as basic soldering.

Definitions of Skill Levels for Workshops

  • Beginner and Beyond: Introductory level course that presents basic knowledge of tools, materials and techniques and is geared towards first timers or those who want to improve and expand their technique. It takes time to build skills.
  • Advanced Beginner and Beyond: Instruction that assumes some familiarity with tools, materials and equipment. Includes reviews and builds on basic skill sets, allows for those with more experience to work at their own pace. Further development of fundamentals, participants have had at least one class or equivalent with professional instruction.
  • Intermediate: Course content that assumes a working knowledge of basic studio tools, materials and equipment necessary to accomplish the projects and techniques to be explored. Participants feel comfortable in the studio setting.
  • Intermediate to Advanced: Course content that requires a proficient working knowledge of studio tools, materials and equipment necessary to accomplish the projects and techniques to be explored in class.
  • Advanced: Assumes proficiency and advanced working knowledge of materials and studio tools and equipment so that the focus is on artistic narrative and/or technical development.

Sarah Montagnoli

Sarah Montagnoli is a Jeweler, Metalsmith, and Educator, living and working in the Philadelphia area. She studied Jewelry Design and Metalsmithing at Moore College of Art and Design (BFA 2018) and received her MFA focusing in Jewelry/Metals/CAD-CAM from Tyler School of Art and Architecture in 2021 along with a Certificate in Teaching in Higher Education. Montagnoli now teaches Introductory Jewelry at her alma mater, as well as other Arts and Crafts centers in the surrounding area. Having learned the process of Powder Coating during her time at Tyler, Sarah fell in love with the process and has fully incorporated it into her practice, coating each piece of her jewelry and wearable works in a saturation of color. Her love for the process stems from its protective qualities, durability, and ability to give an object an incredibly satisfying finish with a vibrant coating
