Embark on a transformative journey exploring the art of watercolor sketching in nature, where sketches serve as the foundation for building an expressive oil painting. Led by experienced artist Jennie Traill Schaeffer, you’ll use watercolor to capture landscapes, understand local color, and incorporate inanimate objects of importance. With guidance, transform your sketches into a narrative-driven oil painting, combining on-site impressions with photo references. Join us for this unique fusion of spontaneity and depth, creating a captivating artistic journey, with a teaching artist known for her nurturing approach that also builds technical understanding. We will use alternative methods of cleaning brushes and direct painting techniques which avoids the use of solvents.

Workshops run from 9:00am to 5:00pm each day

Workshop Levels

Definitions of Skill Levels for Workshops

  • Beginner and Beyond: Introductory level course that presents basic knowledge of tools, materials and techniques and is geared towards first timers or those who want to improve and expand their technique. It takes time to build skills.
  • Advanced Beginner and Beyond: Instruction that assumes some familiarity with tools, materials and equipment. Includes reviews and builds on basic skill sets, allows for those with more experience to work at their own pace. Further development of fundamentals, participants have had at least one class or equivalent with professional instruction.
  • Intermediate: Course content that assumes a working knowledge of basic studio tools, materials and equipment necessary to accomplish the projects and techniques to be explored. Participants feel comfortable in the studio setting.
  • Intermediate to Advanced: Course content that requires a proficient working knowledge of studio tools, materials and equipment necessary to accomplish the projects and techniques to be explored in class.
  • Advanced: Assumes proficiency and advanced working knowledge of materials and studio tools and equipment so that the focus is on artistic narrative and/or technical development.

Jennie Traill Schaeffer

Jennie Traill Schaeffer, a teaching artist, born and raised in Easton, PA, is now based in Durham, NC. TraillWorks, which encapsulates her art making and teaching, was founded in New Jersey in 2005 and grown throughout the Garden State over sixteen years. Her work is rooted in subject matter that venerates objects and places, asking the viewer to stay a bit longer, look deeper and to slow down. She is informed by a developing meditative practice and exploration of her surrounding environments. While much of her art is non-figurative, Jennie infuses figurative energy, vibrant colors and the use of paint as the vehicle of expression, with linear drawn elements. Jennie holds a BFA in Painting and Art Education from Syracuse University, and is known by her students as a nurturing, supportive educator that expertly teaches technique
