This workshop will focus on a variety of technical stone setting techniques and the right tools for the job. You will learn how to fabricate and set stones using a variety of settings from bezel making, flush setting, prong setting, tube setting, and pave. We will be discussing the right setting for a variety of gemstones ranging from faceted, cabochons, and irregular shapes. After these five days of intensive stone setting you will leave feeling confident and ready to design with any gemstone you choose! You do not need to have jewelry making experience but knowing the basic techniques and tools of jewelry making will allow you to move faster through each setting. This course is not intended to focus on design but to help you become proficient at stone setting.

Workshops run from 9:00am to 5:00pm each day

Workshop Levels

Definitions of Skill Levels for Workshops

  • Beginner and Beyond: Introductory level course that presents basic knowledge of tools, materials and techniques and is geared towards first timers or those who want to improve and expand their technique. It takes time to build skills.
  • Advanced Beginner and Beyond: Instruction that assumes some familiarity with tools, materials and equipment. Includes reviews and builds on basic skill sets, allows for those with more experience to work at their own pace. Further development of fundamentals, participants have had at least one class or equivalent with professional instruction.
  • Intermediate: Course content that assumes a working knowledge of basic studio tools, materials and equipment necessary to accomplish the projects and techniques to be explored. Participants feel comfortable in the studio setting.
  • Intermediate to Advanced: Course content that requires a proficient working knowledge of studio tools, materials and equipment necessary to accomplish the projects and techniques to be explored in class.
  • Advanced: Assumes proficiency and advanced working knowledge of materials and studio tools and equipment so that the focus is on artistic narrative and/or technical development.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

Maureen Duffy

Maureen Duffy is a studio jewelry artist and professor who lives and works in Philadelphia, PA. She is an adjunct Jewelry and Metalsmithing professor at Rowan University, New Jersey and Towson University, Maryland. She also is an instructor at Fleisher Art Memorial, one of the oldest art centers in the country, where she has helped build the jewelry program. She loves teaching as much as she does making and values the ability to pass these technical skills on. Maureen’s jewelry practice focuses on both production and one of a kind hand fabricated sterling silver and gold pieces that are inspired by the urban landscape patterns and textures.
