Learn how Taylor creates tactile surfaces on greenware using slip trailing and refinement techniques in this two-day workshop! On day one,you will learn how to mix and apply thick slip to build raised motifs on the surface of leathersoft pots. On day two, Taylor will show how to tidy up common slip trailing errors by smoothing and carving the leatherhard motifs into their final shape. You will leave the workshop with unfired greenware, if desired. Intermediate experience working with clay is required for this workshop. Participants will need to have enough skill to construct their own forms to decorate, as the very basics of throwing and handbuilding will not be covered.

Workshops run from 9:00am to 5:00pm each day

Definitions of Skill Levels for Workshops

  • Beginner and Beyond: Introductory level course that presents basic knowledge of tools, materials and techniques and is geared towards first timers or those who want to improve and expand their technique. It takes time to build skills.
  • Advanced Beginner and Beyond: Instruction that assumes some familiarity with tools, materials and equipment. Includes reviews and builds on basic skill sets, allows for those with more experience to work at their own pace. Further development of fundamentals, participants have had at least one class or equivalent with professional instruction.
  • Intermediate: Course content that assumes a working knowledge of basic studio tools, materials and equipment necessary to accomplish the projects and techniques to be explored. Participants feel comfortable in the studio setting.
  • Intermediate to Advanced: Course content that requires a proficient working knowledge of studio tools, materials and equipment necessary to accomplish the projects and techniques to be explored in class.
  • Advanced: Assumes proficiency and advanced working knowledge of materials and studio tools and equipment so that the focus is on artistic narrative and/or technical development.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

Taylor Sijan

Taylor Sijan is a full-time studio artist from Catawba Island, Ohio. She earned a BFA in 3-D Arts from Bowling Green State University (2016), completed two years of post-baccalaureate study in ceramics at Wichita State University (2016-2018), and obtained an MFA with ceramics emphasis from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (2021). In 2020, she was recognized as one of Ceramics Monthly’s Emerging Artists for her richly decorated porcelain pottery. Taylor enjoys paying forward the knowledge she has accumulated from mentors, professors, and colleagues, and has since taught at institutions including Pocosin Arts School of Fine Craft, Peters Valley School of Craft, Gasworks NYC, and Saratoga Clay Arts Center. In 2023, Taylor joined Wooten Clayworks in Hackettstown, NJ as the studio manager and instructor. Whenever she’s not in the studio, she can usually be found thrifting, gardening, hiking, or spending time with her two cats.
