Come explore the fundamental skills of metalsmithing and jewelry making. We will work with copper, brass, sterling silver, and found objects to create stunning, unique pieces of jewelry. Techniques covered will include sawing and piercing, drilling holes, riveting, annealing, soldering, texturing, patinas, bezel and tab setting, and more. You can expect to leave with 3-5 pieces of completed jewelry. This course is designed for those with no jewelry experience, however if you have prior experience this class will help you refresh and expand on those skills.

Workshops run from 9:00am to 5:00pm each day
Lunch is included for all participants

Workshop Levels

Definitions of Skill Levels for Workshops

  • Beginner and Beyond: Introductory level course that presents basic knowledge of tools, materials and techniques and is geared towards first timers or those who want to improve and expand their technique. It takes time to build skills.
  • Advanced Beginner and Beyond: Instruction that assumes some familiarity with tools, materials and equipment. Includes reviews and builds on basic skill sets, allows for those with more experience to work at their own pace. Further development of fundamentals, participants have had at least one class or equivalent with professional instruction.
  • Intermediate: Course content that assumes a working knowledge of basic studio tools, materials and equipment necessary to accomplish the projects and techniques to be explored. Participants feel comfortable in the studio setting.
  • Intermediate to Advanced: Course content that requires a proficient working knowledge of studio tools, materials and equipment necessary to accomplish the projects and techniques to be explored in class.
  • Advanced: Assumes proficiency and advanced working knowledge of materials and studio tools and equipment so that the focus is on artistic narrative and/or technical development.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

Talya Kantro

Talya Kantro is an object maker and jeweler currently based in Providence, RI. She received her MFA in Jewelry + Metalsmithing from The Rhode Island School of Design in 2021, and her BFA in Metal from SUNY New Paltz in 2017. She has been working with metal for over 15 years. Talya has worked as a bench jeweler for Artemer Studio in Tel Aviv and has taught metalsmithing at numerous craft schools and institutions, including RISD as a graduate instructor, Snowfarm, Pocosin Arts School of Fine Craft where she completed an 11-month residency, and Peters Valley School of Craft where she was the Fine Metals Artist Fellow in 2021 & 2022. When she’s not in the studio, you can probably find her roaming around the woods identifying all the different species of birds that she can.
