Come capture the beauty of the Peters Valley campus and surrounding area with oil on canvas. In this hands-on workshop you will learn the fundamentals of landscape painting including basic color theory, composition techniques, and brush work. Shawn will conduct a demonstration each day which will cover the major concepts of the workshop and then there will be plenty of time for painting en plein air with his guidance. You will develop a more confident approach to painting outdoors which will benefit your overall painting abilities.

Workshop Levels

Definitions of Skill Levels for Workshops

  • Beginner and Beyond: Introductory level course that presents basic knowledge of tools, materials and techniques and is geared towards first timers or those who want to improve and expand their technique. It takes time to build skills.
  • Advanced Beginner and Beyond: Instruction that assumes some familiarity with tools, materials and equipment. Includes reviews and builds on basic skill sets, allows for those with more experience to work at their own pace. Further development of fundamentals, participants have had at least one class or equivalent with professional instruction.
  • Intermediate: Course content that assumes a working knowledge of basic studio tools, materials and equipment necessary to accomplish the projects and techniques to be explored. Participants feel comfortable in the studio setting.
  • Intermediate to Advanced: Course content that requires a proficient working knowledge of studio tools, materials and equipment necessary to accomplish the projects and techniques to be explored in class.
  • Advanced: Assumes proficiency and advanced working knowledge of materials and studio tools and equipment so that the focus is on artistic narrative and/or technical development.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

Shawn Vales

Shawn Vales is an American artist who paints plein air landscapes, portrait commissions and abstract work. He holds a Bachelor degree and Masters degree from the Academy of Art university where he conducted an intensive study of representational art. Those foundations enable Shawn to paint in all genres of art. Shawn’s professional career includes solo, group and event exhibitions primarily in California and Texas. His professional teaching experience includes The Richmond Art Center, The Ichen Art Academy, Vision Academy along with one to one instruction. In November of 2020 Shawn will continue his education under the tutelage of Paul Ingbretson where he will extensively learn the methods of The Boston School painters.
