Eco-Printing or Direct Contact Printing is the process of embedding botanical “stamps” directly from plant material. Working with natural elements such as leaves, blossoms, berries and metal, you will learn how to prepare fabric for natural dyes, which fabrics accept dye well, botanical dye plants, and how to extract the dye into the fabric. A full introduction to the process of “eco-printing” will be demonstrated. You will then use the knowledge of dye plants and process learned to create your own silk scarf, bandana, eco printed one page book and more!

Workshop Levels

Definitions of Skill Levels for Workshops

  • Beginner and Beyond: Introductory level course that presents basic knowledge of tools, materials and techniques and is geared towards first timers or those who want to improve and expand their technique. It takes time to build skills.
  • Advanced Beginner and Beyond: Instruction that assumes some familiarity with tools, materials and equipment. Includes reviews and builds on basic skill sets, allows for those with more experience to work at their own pace. Further development of fundamentals, participants have had at least one class or equivalent with professional instruction.
  • Intermediate: Course content that assumes a working knowledge of basic studio tools, materials and equipment necessary to accomplish the projects and techniques to be explored. Participants feel comfortable in the studio setting.
  • Intermediate to Advanced: Course content that requires a proficient working knowledge of studio tools, materials and equipment necessary to accomplish the projects and techniques to be explored in class.
  • Advanced: Assumes proficiency and advanced working knowledge of materials and studio tools and equipment so that the focus is on artistic narrative and/or technical development.

Kathleen Lang

Kathleen Lang  has been instructing and creating in the mediums of printmaking, papermaking, and book arts for over 15 years. Having discovered eco-printing about 4 years ago – she has additionally been investigating the process involved with print on fabric and paper without ink – using only the dye from botanicals and metal. She has held classes and workshops in various venues including the Printmaking Center of NJ, Arts Council of Princeton, Grounds for Sculpture and the Hunterdon Art Museum. During the past few years Kathleen has won awards for her eco-printing work.
