This class will explore creating collages that visually represent personal memories and dreams. You will have the opportunity to delve into your own experiences to create unique pieces of artwork that reflect your individuality and creativity while exploring various techniques for creating collages. These techniques will include layering, blending, and exploring found materials such as old photographs, magazine clippings, and fabric scraps. We will begin by reflecting on our specific memories and dreams; then, participants can journal and sketch thoughts, themes, and ideas, using them to inspire different pieces. Throughout the course, we will discuss the principles of composition, color theory, and texture and how these can create cohesive and visually captivating collages. Everyone is encouraged to experiment with different techniques and styles while receiving personalized feedback and guidance from the instructor.

Workshops run from 9:00am to 5:00pm each day
Lunch is included for all participants

Level: Beginner and Beyond
Workshop Levels

Definitions of Skill Levels for Workshops

  • Beginner and Beyond: Introductory level course that presents basic knowledge of tools, materials and techniques and is geared towards first timers or those who want to improve and expand their technique. It takes time to build skills.
  • Advanced Beginner and Beyond: Instruction that assumes some familiarity with tools, materials and equipment. Includes reviews and builds on basic skill sets, allows for those with more experience to work at their own pace. Further development of fundamentals, participants have had at least one class or equivalent with professional instruction.
  • Intermediate: Course content that assumes a working knowledge of basic studio tools, materials and equipment necessary to accomplish the projects and techniques to be explored. Participants feel comfortable in the studio setting.
  • Intermediate to Advanced: Course content that requires a proficient working knowledge of studio tools, materials and equipment necessary to accomplish the projects and techniques to be explored in class.
  • Advanced: Assumes proficiency and advanced working knowledge of materials and studio tools and equipment so that the focus is on artistic narrative and/or technical development.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

Mercedes Jelinek

Mercedes Jelinek is an American artist and photographer living and working in Brooklyn, NY. She holds a BFA in Visual Arts from the State University of New York at Purchase and an MFA from Louisiana State University. Mercedes has served as a professor, lecturer, visiting artist, and artist resident throughout the U.S. and Italy, including East Carolina University in Certaldo, Italy, Penland School of Craft, The New School Parsons, and Yale University School of Art. She is a board member of Blue Sky Gallery (Portland, OR) and Penland School of Craft (Penland, NC) Her work and publications have been exhibited both nationally and internationally. They are held in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, Guggenheim Museum, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Whitney Museum, Library of Congress, Aperture Foundation, and the Getty Institute.
