Soldering is an essential process in jewelry making that uses silver solder to join two or more pieces of metal together. During this three day workshop you can expect to learn the basics of soldering and gain confidence with the torch. We will practice working with various types of solder (hard, medium and easy) to fabricate rings, earrings and/or pendants. We will also go over other jewelry making techniques such as piercing, forming, drilling, stamping, filing, sanding, and finishing to empower you to make pieces that are unique to you. This workshop is open to all levels and beginners are encouraged.

Workshops run from 9:00am to 5:00pm each day
Lunch is included for all participants

Workshop Levels

Definitions of Skill Levels for Workshops

  • Beginner and Beyond: Introductory level course that presents basic knowledge of tools, materials and techniques and is geared towards first timers or those who want to improve and expand their technique. It takes time to build skills.
  • Advanced Beginner and Beyond: Instruction that assumes some familiarity with tools, materials and equipment. Includes reviews and builds on basic skill sets, allows for those with more experience to work at their own pace. Further development of fundamentals, participants have had at least one class or equivalent with professional instruction.
  • Intermediate: Course content that assumes a working knowledge of basic studio tools, materials and equipment necessary to accomplish the projects and techniques to be explored. Participants feel comfortable in the studio setting.
  • Intermediate to Advanced: Course content that requires a proficient working knowledge of studio tools, materials and equipment necessary to accomplish the projects and techniques to be explored in class.
  • Advanced: Assumes proficiency and advanced working knowledge of materials and studio tools and equipment so that the focus is on artistic narrative and/or technical development.

Madie Maier

Madie Maier is an artist and teacher based in Brooklyn, NY. She received her BFA at Virginia Commonwealth University from the Department of Craft and Materials Studies. Maier makes playful, toy inspired objects, with a focus on jewelry. Apart from the studio, she finds inspiration in the classroom and encourages playful experimentation as an essential part in both learning and making. Maier teaches jewelry workshops at Brooklyn Metalworks, and she teaches robotics to K-5 students at the Brooklyn Robot Foundry. Maier has completed an assistantship and subsequent residency at Peters Valley School of Craft, as well as a residency at the Baltimore Jewelry Center.
