Many rules that govern regular clay do not apply to paper clay. This workshop will give you the opportunity to explore and experience new approaches to functional pottery and sculptural forms in paper clay. Join visiting artist Jerry Bennett as he guides you through making paper clay and bonding slips for hand-built forms. In this two-day workshop, you will expand your understanding of this unique material by adding various fibers to the clay to make both functional pottery and sculptural forms. Gain valuable insight as Jerry shares practical, problem-solving advice for your studio work (e.g., how to fix broken work, reduce clay shrinkage, and prevent/repair cracks). Due to the time constraints, pieces will not be fired in this workshop. All Experience Levels are Welcome!

Workshops run from 9:00am to 5:00pm each day
Lunch is included for all participants

**We plan workshops 6-12 months in advance and make every effort to accurately calculate material costs. Due to fluctuating costs of materials, we will notify you 2 weeks in advance of the start of your workshop if the price has increased. Typically this will be a marginal fee of $10-$50.

Definitions of Skill Levels for Workshops

  • Beginner and Beyond: Introductory level course that presents basic knowledge of tools, materials and techniques and is geared towards first timers or those who want to improve and expand their technique. It takes time to build skills.
  • Advanced Beginner and Beyond: Instruction that assumes some familiarity with tools, materials and equipment. Includes reviews and builds on basic skill sets, allows for those with more experience to work at their own pace. Further development of fundamentals, participants have had at least one class or equivalent with professional instruction.
  • Intermediate: Course content that assumes a working knowledge of basic studio tools, materials and equipment necessary to accomplish the projects and techniques to be explored. Participants feel comfortable in the studio setting.
  • Intermediate to Advanced: Course content that requires a proficient working knowledge of studio tools, materials and equipment necessary to accomplish the projects and techniques to be explored in class.
  • Advanced: Assumes proficiency and advanced working knowledge of materials and studio tools and equipment so that the focus is on artistic narrative and/or technical development.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

Jerry Bennett

Jerry Bennett is an active studio artist in Philadelphia and runs the Two Rivers Studio. He received a BFA at Southwest Missouri State University and his M.F.A. from Indiana University at Bloomington, Indiana, in 1975. He has given workshops and lectures at over 50 colleges, schools, and art centers throughout the U.S.A., and recently served as the leader of the Second International Paper Symposium in Kecskemet, Hungary.
