In this 3 day introductory workshop, students will learn the basics of the lathe and be introduced to spindle and bowl turning. We will spend the first day learning how to mount our workpiece on the lathe, either on a faceplate or between the centers. As we gain an understanding for the turning tools, participants will then be able shape the wood to their design and explore the different avenues of each tool. They will be introduced to techniques for turning rolling pins, candle sticks, chess pieces, bowls, and other sculptural objects. Through guided demonstrations and plenty of turning time, this playful hands-on workshop will cover safety, tool handling, shaping techniques, sanding and finishing.

Workshops run from 9:00am to 5:00pm each day
Lunch is included for all participants

**We plan workshops 6-12 months in advance and make every effort to accurately calculate material costs. Due to fluctuating costs of materials, we will notify you 2 weeks in advance of the start of your workshop if the price has increased. Typically this will be a marginal fee of $10-$50.

Definitions of Skill Levels for Workshops

  • Beginner and Beyond: Introductory level course that presents basic knowledge of tools, materials and techniques and is geared towards first timers or those who want to improve and expand their technique. It takes time to build skills.
  • Advanced Beginner and Beyond: Instruction that assumes some familiarity with tools, materials and equipment. Includes reviews and builds on basic skill sets, allows for those with more experience to work at their own pace. Further development of fundamentals, participants have had at least one class or equivalent with professional instruction.
  • Intermediate: Course content that assumes a working knowledge of basic studio tools, materials and equipment necessary to accomplish the projects and techniques to be explored. Participants feel comfortable in the studio setting.
  • Intermediate to Advanced: Course content that requires a proficient working knowledge of studio tools, materials and equipment necessary to accomplish the projects and techniques to be explored in class.
  • Advanced: Assumes proficiency and advanced working knowledge of materials and studio tools and equipment so that the focus is on artistic narrative and/or technical development.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

Lisa Nguyen

Based in Brooklyn, New York, Lisa Nguyen is a furniture maker whose work blends traditional craftsmanship with thoughtful, contemporary design. With a background in woodworking and a particular interest in Shaker forms, Lisa explores how structure, color, and comfort can shape the ways we share space, with both people and pets. Her furniture draws inspiration from Greek architecture and the quiet companionship of her cat, Leo, merging architectural clarity with a sense of calm domestic intimacy. Lisa’s approach values mindfulness, subtle humor, and the everyday beauty found in living alongside handmade objects. She was a two-year Core Fellow at the Penland School of Craft in Spruce Pine, North Carolina, where she deepened her study of form, color, and traditional furniture-making techniques.
