This introductory class will cover all the materials, tools and techniques to create stained glass in the copper foil technique. Participants will select from designs provided to create a small hanging panel. This project will take the class through every step of the process-glass cutting, grinding, foiling, soldering and finishing-as well as studio setup and safety. We’ll also touch on designing specifically for stained glass and some non-traditional techniques.

*Workshops run from 9:00am to 5:00pm each day

Workshop Levels

Definitions of Skill Levels for Workshops

  • Beginner and Beyond: Introductory level course that presents basic knowledge of tools, materials and techniques and is geared towards first timers or those who want to improve and expand their technique. It takes time to build skills.
  • Advanced Beginner and Beyond: Instruction that assumes some familiarity with tools, materials and equipment. Includes reviews and builds on basic skill sets, allows for those with more experience to work at their own pace. Further development of fundamentals, participants have had at least one class or equivalent with professional instruction.
  • Intermediate: Course content that assumes a working knowledge of basic studio tools, materials and equipment necessary to accomplish the projects and techniques to be explored. Participants feel comfortable in the studio setting.
  • Intermediate to Advanced: Course content that requires a proficient working knowledge of studio tools, materials and equipment necessary to accomplish the projects and techniques to be explored in class.
  • Advanced: Assumes proficiency and advanced working knowledge of materials and studio tools and equipment so that the focus is on artistic narrative and/or technical development.

Neile Cooper

Neile Cooper is a stained glass artist, author, and instructor based in New Jersey whose work often features fantastical representations of natural imagery and frequently incorporates found objects and non-traditional techniques. She received a 2021 Individual Artist Fellowship from the New Jersey State Council of the Arts. Her first book, Kicking Glass, A Creative Guide to Stained Glass Craft, will be published by Bloomsbury Publishing in May 2022. Neile is best known for her Stained Glass Cabin in the Woods, a small sanctuary clad entirely in reclaimed window frames filled with her stained glass. She also creates windows for both residential and commercial spaces, and sells stained glass objects, jewelry, and patterns.
