Intro to Plique à Jour Enamel

$515.00

Details Fee Breakdown:
Tuition: $395
Material Fee: $120

Plique-à-jour (French for “letting in daylight”) is a vitreous enameling technique where the enamel is applied in cells, similar to cloisonné, but with no backing in the final product, so light can shine through the transparent or translucent enamel. The effect is often likened to a miniaturized stained glass. In this workshop, you will practice hand-piercing cells in silver sheet metal, make your own tools for enamel application, and you will learn wet enamel packing processes in order to create bright and colorful plique-à-jour designs. You will also have an opportunity to learn cold-connection techniques for jewelry that are suitable for finishing enamel pieces for earrings or pendants. While you are encouraged to bring your ideas to class, the instructor will provide templates for piercing for those who wish to solely concentrate their time on learning a new way to enamel.

Workshops run from 9:00am to 5:00pm each day
Lunch is included for all participants

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

Ellyse Bendillo

After years studying jewelry and design, Ellyse Bendillo found an apprenticeship with a master enamellist in 2017. Specializing in antique enamel restoration, Ellyse was first introduced to plique-à-jour enamel in the process of restoring an old Victorian-era figure. While she must employ a wide spread of enamel techniques in restoration work, she has steadily incorporated plique-à-jour into her personal practice. Ellyse was rewarded with an Emerging Artist Residency at the Baltimore Jewelry Center (February 2024) for the purpose of studying applications of this technique, along with enamel paints and lusters, to create her own narrative imagery.
