Explore color and texture through thread! This beginner’s hand embroidery workshop will be an introduction to the rich techniques and histories of hand embroidery. We will use thread and stitch styles to explore surface embellishment through color and texture. You will learn how to bring your visions to life- stitch by stitch! We will go through many hand embroidery stitches, but any previous knowledge about embroidery is welcome!

*Workshops run from 9:00am to 5:00pm each day

 

Level: Beginner and Beyond
Workshop Levels

Definitions of Skill Levels for Workshops

  • Beginner and Beyond: Introductory level course that presents basic knowledge of tools, materials and techniques and is geared towards first timers or those who want to improve and expand their technique. It takes time to build skills.
  • Advanced Beginner and Beyond: Instruction that assumes some familiarity with tools, materials and equipment. Includes reviews and builds on basic skill sets, allows for those with more experience to work at their own pace. Further development of fundamentals, participants have had at least one class or equivalent with professional instruction.
  • Intermediate: Course content that assumes a working knowledge of basic studio tools, materials and equipment necessary to accomplish the projects and techniques to be explored. Participants feel comfortable in the studio setting.
  • Intermediate to Advanced: Course content that requires a proficient working knowledge of studio tools, materials and equipment necessary to accomplish the projects and techniques to be explored in class.
  • Advanced: Assumes proficiency and advanced working knowledge of materials and studio tools and equipment so that the focus is on artistic narrative and/or technical development.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

Caroline Silverman

Caroline Silverman is an artist and writer who works at the intersection of annotation, object, and context. Born in Newburyport, MA, she earned her BFA in Textiles from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2018, with dual Concentrations in Literary Arts Studies, and Gender, Race, and Sexuality. Her work has been exhibited at the Burroughs & Chapin Museum, Myrtle Beach, SC (2014), Rhode Island School of Design, Providence, RI (2017, 2018), Emily Harvey Gallery, Venice, Italy (2017), Dedee Shattuck Gallery, Westport, MA (2018),  Mana Contemporary, Jersey City, NJ (2019, 2020), and the RISD Museum (2021) amongst others. Her work has also been published in A Form of Perpetual Caress (2020), Quiltfolk Magazine (2023) and Objects as Texts in conjunction with Brown University (2018). Caroline currently maintains a multidisciplinary studio practice in New York City and teaches at the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, RI.
