Come design and build a one-of-a-kind table! Starting with a discussion on the characteristics of wood as a building material, we will then jump into design and create full-scale drawings. This workshop will cover all of the machines used for the dimensioning and shaping of rough lumber into finely crafted furniture, including getting the most out of the router utilizing pattern templates for fine details made easy. Participants will discover the structural aspects of joinery with a focus on using floating mortise-and-tenons. Finishes and milk paint will also be explored.

Workshops run from 9:00am to 5:00pm each day
Lunch is included for all participants

Workshop Levels

Definitions of Skill Levels for Workshops

  • Beginner and Beyond: Introductory level course that presents basic knowledge of tools, materials and techniques and is geared towards first timers or those who want to improve and expand their technique. It takes time to build skills.
  • Advanced Beginner and Beyond: Instruction that assumes some familiarity with tools, materials and equipment. Includes reviews and builds on basic skill sets, allows for those with more experience to work at their own pace. Further development of fundamentals, participants have had at least one class or equivalent with professional instruction.
  • Intermediate: Course content that assumes a working knowledge of basic studio tools, materials and equipment necessary to accomplish the projects and techniques to be explored. Participants feel comfortable in the studio setting.
  • Intermediate to Advanced: Course content that requires a proficient working knowledge of studio tools, materials and equipment necessary to accomplish the projects and techniques to be explored in class.
  • Advanced: Assumes proficiency and advanced working knowledge of materials and studio tools and equipment so that the focus is on artistic narrative and/or technical development.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

Wyatt Severs

Wyatt Severs studied visual art at Murray State University and various craft schools across the country. He has taught at Penland School of Craft, John C. Campbell Folk School, Appalachian Center for Craft and Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts. His work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, and in publications include 500 Cabinets, Making Good, Maker Moxie and Woodwork magazine. In 2022 & 2023, Wyatt taught carpentry and woodworking for the Kentucky Dept. of Education at the Paducah Area Technology Center.
