Have you ever wanted to add a stone setting to your jewelry? Learn how to use your flexible shaft, various burs, and engraving tools to make your own settings from various materials. You will learn how to carve different metals using a variety of burrs to produce finished pieces complete with setting instruction. Settings will include prongs, beads, and some pave’. All processes will be shown on an enlarged screen for easy viewing. A selection of rings will be provided in sterling silver and additional mountings will be available for purchase at a minimal fee.

Workshop Levels

Definitions of Skill Levels for Workshops

  • Beginner and Beyond: Introductory level course that presents basic knowledge of tools, materials and techniques and is geared towards first timers or those who want to improve and expand their technique. It takes time to build skills.
  • Advanced Beginner and Beyond: Instruction that assumes some familiarity with tools, materials and equipment. Includes reviews and builds on basic skill sets, allows for those with more experience to work at their own pace. Further development of fundamentals, participants have had at least one class or equivalent with professional instruction.
  • Intermediate: Course content that assumes a working knowledge of basic studio tools, materials and equipment necessary to accomplish the projects and techniques to be explored. Participants feel comfortable in the studio setting.
  • Intermediate to Advanced: Course content that requires a proficient working knowledge of studio tools, materials and equipment necessary to accomplish the projects and techniques to be explored in class.
  • Advanced: Assumes proficiency and advanced working knowledge of materials and studio tools and equipment so that the focus is on artistic narrative and/or technical development.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

Paul Nielsen

Paul Nielsen is a jewelry designer and manufacturer from Lower Providence, PA. He has been a designer for 30 years during which time he has become a master diamond setter and known in the jewelry industry as Pave’ Paul. He has recently taught at Tyler School of Art and various universities throughout the state of Pennsylvania. Currently Paul is working in his jewelry studio on historic jeweler’s row in Philadelphia exploring jewelry design as wearable sculptures and providing stonesetting services to the industry. He is the owner of Paul Nielsen Jewelry Designs and Pave’ Paul LLC.
