In this hands-on woodworking class, participants will explore the fundamentals of woodworking while building a hardwood trestle table. You will work with both machines (tablesaw, router, jointer, thickness planer) and hand tools to construct your table. You will start by building the base of your table using traditional mortise & tenon construction and will learn how to work off a reference edge which is the foundation of fine furniture making. You will finish your table by making the top. While making the top you will learn about the milling process, gluing up boards and wood movement. The basic furniture-making techniques learned in this class can be applied to building various projects. This class is suitable for all levels. If you have prior experience this class will help you refresh & refine your woodworking skills and learn new tricks & techniques. Everyone will leave the class with many new skills and a brand-new table.

Workshops run from 9:00am to 5:00pm each day
Lunch is included for all participants

Definitions of Skill Levels for Workshops

  • Beginner and Beyond: Introductory level course that presents basic knowledge of tools, materials and techniques and is geared towards first timers or those who want to improve and expand their technique. It takes time to build skills.
  • Advanced Beginner and Beyond: Instruction that assumes some familiarity with tools, materials and equipment. Includes reviews and builds on basic skill sets, allows for those with more experience to work at their own pace. Further development of fundamentals, participants have had at least one class or equivalent with professional instruction.
  • Intermediate: Course content that assumes a working knowledge of basic studio tools, materials and equipment necessary to accomplish the projects and techniques to be explored. Participants feel comfortable in the studio setting.
  • Intermediate to Advanced: Course content that requires a proficient working knowledge of studio tools, materials and equipment necessary to accomplish the projects and techniques to be explored in class.
  • Advanced: Assumes proficiency and advanced working knowledge of materials and studio tools and equipment so that the focus is on artistic narrative and/or technical development.

t i m b e r  is a queer designer, woodworker, farmer and folk herbalist with a passion for all things wood. timber brings knowledge and experience to the arena of craft in an effort to explore the value of the everyday objects that bring meaning to our lives. These different disciplines inform a dedicated practice of developing a personal vernacular in the design and manufacture of furniture, utilitarian objects and sculpture that highlight the threshold between built and natural environments. The hope is that this work might lead us to develop more symbiotic relationships with our surroundings.
