In this workshop, Yoav will explain and demonstrate the essential initiation, sharpening, and setting up techniques common to our basic woodworking tools. We will learn how to prepare and sharpen chisels, flatten a plane’s sole and sharpen its blade. Yoav will discuss and demonstrate how to sharpen and hone carving tools such as gouges and whittling knives. We will also talk about tool maintenance, lubrication, and rust prevention. The typical sharpening and honing media, such as diamond and water stones, strops, and honing guides, will be discussed and demonstrations on how to build makeshift slip stones will be provided.

This class will be conducted live on Zoom. Participants will receive an email from Peters Valley at least 48 hours prior that includes a link and a password. Only registered participants will be admitted.

Definitions of Skill Levels for Workshops

  • Beginner and Beyond: Introductory level course that presents basic knowledge of tools, materials and techniques and is geared towards first timers or those who want to improve and expand their technique. It takes time to build skills.
  • Advanced Beginner and Beyond: Instruction that assumes some familiarity with tools, materials and equipment. Includes reviews and builds on basic skill sets, allows for those with more experience to work at their own pace. Further development of fundamentals, participants have had at least one class or equivalent with professional instruction.
  • Intermediate: Course content that assumes a working knowledge of basic studio tools, materials and equipment necessary to accomplish the projects and techniques to be explored. Participants feel comfortable in the studio setting.
  • Intermediate to Advanced: Course content that requires a proficient working knowledge of studio tools, materials and equipment necessary to accomplish the projects and techniques to be explored in class.
  • Advanced: Assumes proficiency and advanced working knowledge of materials and studio tools and equipment so that the focus is on artistic narrative and/or technical development.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

Yoav Liberman

Yoav S. Liberman is a studio furniture artist, writer, and educator. His pieces have been featured in many curated exhibitions and woodworking books, most recently in Modern Judaica: Today’s Makers, Today’s Sacred Objects by Schiffer Publishing. He’s a regular contributor to Fine Woodworking and Popular Woodworking Magazines and a past contributor to American Woodworker and Woodwork Magazines. Yoav has a degree in architecture and later held two competitive residency programs at the Worcester Center for Crafts in Massachusetts and the Windgate Foundation Fellowship at Purchase College, New York. Yoav teaches woodworking and design at the Rudolf Steiner School in Manhattan and frequently guest teaches in craft schools across the country. He lives in Upper Saddle River, NJ. Yoav is the author of Working Reclaimed Wood: A Guide for Woodworkers, Makers & Designers, published by Popular Woodworking Books, an imprint of Penguin Random House, 2018.
