Eggshell White is a beautiful, opaque warm white for water-based media including watercolors and gouache, as well as painting grounds and pastels. Chicken eggs are an age-old source of the pigment, recognized today as calcium carbonate. Join Natalie Stopka in a live online demonstration of pigment processing, during which we’ll discuss how the artisans of centuries past took advantage of the limestone cycle to develop studio materials. Together we’ll observe how the physical, optical, and metaphorical properties of Eggshell White make it a wonderful addition to the artist’s natural palette. Q+A will follow Natalie’s presentation.
This demonstration will be conducted live on Zoom. Participants will receive an email from Peters Valley at least 48 hours prior that includes a link and a password. Only registered participants will be admitted.
Natalie Stopka is an interdisciplinary artist and educator focused on the material history of color and sustainable studio practice. Utilizing natural dyes and handmade pigments, she captures material and elemental interactions in her collaborative, experimental art practice. Raised on the south coast of Massachusetts, she earned a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design and MFA from the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque. Her studio and dye garden are in Yonkers, New York.
