Come experience the thrill of creating large, expressive ceramic pots and mastering the ancient art of Noborigama wood-fired pottery with ceramic artist David Bogus. In this immersive workshop, you’ll learn the techniques and traditions of crafting substantial vessels and participate in the exciting process of firing them in a Noborigama kiln.

Workshop Levels

Definitions of Skill Levels for Workshops

  • Beginner and Beyond: Introductory level course that presents basic knowledge of tools, materials and techniques and is geared towards first timers or those who want to improve and expand their technique. It takes time to build skills.
  • Advanced Beginner and Beyond: Instruction that assumes some familiarity with tools, materials and equipment. Includes reviews and builds on basic skill sets, allows for those with more experience to work at their own pace. Further development of fundamentals, participants have had at least one class or equivalent with professional instruction.
  • Intermediate: Course content that assumes a working knowledge of basic studio tools, materials and equipment necessary to accomplish the projects and techniques to be explored. Participants feel comfortable in the studio setting.
  • Intermediate to Advanced: Course content that requires a proficient working knowledge of studio tools, materials and equipment necessary to accomplish the projects and techniques to be explored in class.
  • Advanced: Assumes proficiency and advanced working knowledge of materials and studio tools and equipment so that the focus is on artistic narrative and/or technical development.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

David Bogus

David Bogus was born in Fall River, Massachusetts and holds an MFA from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and a BFA from the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth. He has taught at Green Mountain College, the University of Idaho, the University of Wyoming, Texas A&M International University, Eastern Kentucky University, University of Florida, and is currently Ceramics Coordinator at Bucks County Community College and Head of Ceramics at Peters Valley. He has shown his work both internationally and nationally at various venues including; Icheon World Ceramic Center, Alijira Center for Contemporary Art, The Las Cruces Museum of Art, The Carbondale Clay Center, The Nicolaysen Museum of Art, The Anderson Museum of Contemporary Art, The Florida State University Museum of Art, The Seattle Design Center, The Phoenix Gallery, and Brown University.
