This online workshop will inspire and inform participants to get creative with color! Whether you can’t recall the basics or your palette is burned out, together we’ll awaken your color sense with an introductory discussion of color theory and materiality. Each participant will assess their color preferences and learn how to extrapolate their favorite color harmonies into endless palettes. An overview of pigments, dyes, and binders will give you a springboard for applying theory to practice in any art form. 

This class will be conducted live on Zoom. Participants will receive an email from Peters Valley at least 48 hours prior that includes a link and a password. Only registered participants will be admitted.

Workshop Levels

Definitions of Skill Levels for Workshops

  • Beginner and Beyond: Introductory level course that presents basic knowledge of tools, materials and techniques and is geared towards first timers or those who want to improve and expand their technique. It takes time to build skills.
  • Advanced Beginner and Beyond: Instruction that assumes some familiarity with tools, materials and equipment. Includes reviews and builds on basic skill sets, allows for those with more experience to work at their own pace. Further development of fundamentals, participants have had at least one class or equivalent with professional instruction.
  • Intermediate: Course content that assumes a working knowledge of basic studio tools, materials and equipment necessary to accomplish the projects and techniques to be explored. Participants feel comfortable in the studio setting.
  • Intermediate to Advanced: Course content that requires a proficient working knowledge of studio tools, materials and equipment necessary to accomplish the projects and techniques to be explored in class.
  • Advanced: Assumes proficiency and advanced working knowledge of materials and studio tools and equipment so that the focus is on artistic narrative and/or technical development.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

Natalie Stopka

Natalie Stopka focuses on natural materials and historical techniques to create abstract, organic drawings and prints. These meticulous, layered images incorporate plant dyes that are foraged, bartered, or grown in her studio garden. The plants provide a seasonally evolving vocabulary of texture and color rooted in the entangled forces of the natural world. Natalie’s studio is in Yonkers, New York. She is a graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design and a current MFA candidate for Interdisciplinary Art and Regenerative Culture at the University of New Mexico.
