Advance your skills and learn stone setting! This workshop will teach you how to bezel set stones. You will fabricate a bezel setting in silver to set cabochon stones and learn how to tube set faceted stones. We will apply soldering and metal working techniques to create our settings and incorporate them into jewelry. This class is not project based, but you could leave with a ring or a pendant. Some experience with sawing and soldering is helpful.

Workshops run from 9:00am to 5:00pm each day
Lunch is included for all participants

**We plan workshops 6-12 months in advance and make every effort to accurately calculate material costs. Due to fluctuating costs of materials, we will notify you 2 weeks in advance of the start of your workshop if the price has increased. Typically this will be a marginal fee of $10-$50.

Definitions of Skill Levels for Workshops

  • Beginner and Beyond: Introductory level course that presents basic knowledge of tools, materials and techniques and is geared towards first timers or those who want to improve and expand their technique. It takes time to build skills.
  • Advanced Beginner and Beyond: Instruction that assumes some familiarity with tools, materials and equipment. Includes reviews and builds on basic skill sets, allows for those with more experience to work at their own pace. Further development of fundamentals, participants have had at least one class or equivalent with professional instruction.
  • Intermediate: Course content that assumes a working knowledge of basic studio tools, materials and equipment necessary to accomplish the projects and techniques to be explored. Participants feel comfortable in the studio setting.
  • Intermediate to Advanced: Course content that requires a proficient working knowledge of studio tools, materials and equipment necessary to accomplish the projects and techniques to be explored in class.
  • Advanced: Assumes proficiency and advanced working knowledge of materials and studio tools and equipment so that the focus is on artistic narrative and/or technical development.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

Mia Kaplan

Mia Kaplan is an artist, bench jeweler, and educator. She is currently living in Philadelphia. She received a BA in Studio Art at Earlham College. She has 11 years of experience working in metals and jewelry and now works full time as the Production Specialist and Bench Jeweler at Emily Chelsea Jewelry. One highlight of her professional experience is completing the Core Fellowship at the Penland School of Craft. She currently is a member of Night Shift Studio as her jewelry studio. Mia exhibits her work nationally and also teaches at craft schools around the country.
