Ready to take your knowledge of encaustic to the next level? With an emphasis on mixed-media, the techniques and materials covered  will include types of wax and their uses, the latest tools, mark-making, stencils and masks. Progressive painting and collage techniques such as transparency and opacity, blending, gradations, pours and utilizing horsehair as a drawing tool will be covered. Discussions of ideas and progress will take place daily as well as an optional one on one mentor discussion with each participant and instructor. This workshop is open to all levels, however it is helpful to have previous experience with the encaustic medium.

Definitions of Skill Levels for Workshops

  • Beginner and Beyond: Introductory level course that presents basic knowledge of tools, materials and techniques and is geared towards first timers or those who want to improve and expand their technique. It takes time to build skills.
  • Advanced Beginner and Beyond: Instruction that assumes some familiarity with tools, materials and equipment. Includes reviews and builds on basic skill sets, allows for those with more experience to work at their own pace. Further development of fundamentals, participants have had at least one class or equivalent with professional instruction.
  • Intermediate: Course content that assumes a working knowledge of basic studio tools, materials and equipment necessary to accomplish the projects and techniques to be explored. Participants feel comfortable in the studio setting.
  • Intermediate to Advanced: Course content that requires a proficient working knowledge of studio tools, materials and equipment necessary to accomplish the projects and techniques to be explored in class.
  • Advanced: Assumes proficiency and advanced working knowledge of materials and studio tools and equipment so that the focus is on artistic narrative and/or technical development.

Lorraine Glessner

Lorraine Glessner’s love of surface, pattern, markmaking and image has led her to combine disparate materials and processes in her work. Lorraine is a former Assistant Professor at Tyler School of Art, a workshop instructor and an award-winning artist. She has a diverse art background with skills that include painting, sculpture, photography, digital imaging and much more. Lorraine brings to her teaching a strong interdisciplinary approach, mixed with a balance of concept, process, experimentation and discovery.
