This class is for those individuals who would like to learn to navigate a woodshop in a physically and emotionally safe environment. Participants will learn proper usage and technique for both hand tools and power tools. We will touch on wood as a medium for working with and the best practices for various applications of it. You can expect to work on a small project (functional or non functional) that will have you practicing the things that you are learning. This class is for women, non binary and trans folks who have no experience at all to those who have some experience but want a space to ask questions and push their skills.

Workshops run from 9:00am to 5:00pm each day
Lunch is included for all participants

 

Level: Beginner and Beyond
Workshop Levels

Definitions of Skill Levels for Workshops

  • Beginner and Beyond: Introductory level course that presents basic knowledge of tools, materials and techniques and is geared towards first timers or those who want to improve and expand their technique. It takes time to build skills.
  • Advanced Beginner and Beyond: Instruction that assumes some familiarity with tools, materials and equipment. Includes reviews and builds on basic skill sets, allows for those with more experience to work at their own pace. Further development of fundamentals, participants have had at least one class or equivalent with professional instruction.
  • Intermediate: Course content that assumes a working knowledge of basic studio tools, materials and equipment necessary to accomplish the projects and techniques to be explored. Participants feel comfortable in the studio setting.
  • Intermediate to Advanced: Course content that requires a proficient working knowledge of studio tools, materials and equipment necessary to accomplish the projects and techniques to be explored in class.
  • Advanced: Assumes proficiency and advanced working knowledge of materials and studio tools and equipment so that the focus is on artistic narrative and/or technical development.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

Chelsea Witt

Chelsea Witt is a woodworker, furniture maker, sculptor, and illustrator. After spending many years learning to navigate this male dominated field they have made it a priority to offer classes to the underrepresented who desire to learn woodworking within safe environments. Chelsea has trained under several individual makers as well as have experience working in a designer production studio. In their own work they strive to push the boundaries of fine furniture techniques and utilize rudimentary shapes to explore the way that simplicity and complexity coexist.
