April 13, 2023 by Raechel Bihler Leave a Comment

Join us for an inspiring conversation between donald a clark and Chotsani Elaine Dean! Their conversation will focus on their co-written book “Contemporary Black American Ceramic Artists,” which honors the contributions, presence, and experiences of Black artists who are part of the contemporary clay community. The book specifically dives into the work of 38 of today’s top African American artists in clay, the earlier Black artists who paved their paths, and how their work fits into the 21st-century conversation. Chotsani and donald’s book is available for purchase at www.schifferpublishing.com.

donald a clark is a core figure in the American ceramic art movement’s development over the past 40 years, was a partner at the Pinch Pottery and Ferrin Gallery and served as research manager for the Marks Project. His collection of ceramic art illuminates the rise of the studio pottery movement. He writes for publications such as Ceramics Monthly and Studio Potter and is the author of Making a Living in Crafts (Lark).

Chotsani Elaine Dean is an artist and Assistant Professor of Ceramics at the University of Minnesota. She has been in residence at the John Michael Kohler Artist Residency, and recipient of a Fulbright Scholar Teaching and Research grant in India. Dean was the inaugural MJ DO Good resident at Red Lodge Clay Center in Montana, held the position of studio manager at Wesleyan Potters in Middletown, Connecticut, and is the recipient of a Connecticut Arts Grant. She has lectured and exhibited widely in solo and group exhibitions and has taught at institutions including Banaras Hindu University in Varanasi, India, University of Connecticut, Connecticut College, and Hartford Art School. For more about Chotsani visit her website: www.chotsanielainedean.com.

Peters Valley is pleased to offer this event with thanks to Schiffer Publishing for funding a mini-series of virtual artist talks Spring 2023.
