Michelle Im has taught in a variety of settings since 2008. She started teaching as a public school teacher in New York City and led an after-school art program at a high school for several years before turning her focus on teaching ceramics at community studios. Her overall ceramics experience spans across 12 years which includes both wheel-throwing and handbuilding. Her current studio practice is mainly in handbuilding with an interest in creating utilitarian objects as well as sculptural forms. Intricate surface decoration with vibrant colors, humor, and narrative themes are a few characteristics that describe the aesthetics of her work. She received the Teaching Artist Cohort award from the Center For Craft in 2023 and currently teaches handbuilding at Greenwich House Pottery while maintaining her studio practice. Her teaching philosophy centers around the students potential that balances skill building & the ceramics process with navigating the path to discover one’s voice.
