Studio & Safety Information for the Fine Metals Studio at Peters Valley...

# OF STUDENTS: 12

EQUIPMENT:The Fine Metals Studio at Peters Valley Craft Center is equipped to handle a variety of jewelry and fine metal working techniques. The studio can accommodate up to 12 students per class allowing ample room for students to work. The studio includes anvils, press , soldering tools, polishers, and hand tools including a variety of fine metals hammers, tongs, set tools, chisels and punches, and hand power tools such as grinders and drills.

Your instructor will determine which equipment is suitable for use during a class and some equipment may not be available in all sessions. The student is responsible for any damaged and/ or lost items and will be required to pay for the cost of repair and/or replacement of the damaged/ lost equipment.

STUDIO & MATERIALS FEES: Peters Valley sets estimated fees according to supplies your instructor has requested. In a small number of cases, where the price of steel or other supplies has inflated, students will be made aware of a slightly higher fee when they are sent their materials list for the workshop. In the production of their own work, students will be charged for additional materials.

STUDIO SUPPLIES: Students are welcome to bring favorite personal hand tools for use in the studio. If you are not sure, please contact the studio.
Generally, the studio & materials fee does not cover the metal for the workshop. The materials list sent prior to the workshop will outline metal and supplies that the student will need to acquire before the class.

A variety of finishing supplies are regularly kept on hand in the studio including polishes, oils, various spray paints, and patina chemicals. Instructors may make special requests to facilitate unique processes.

HAZARDOUS WASTE INFO: The school maintains a comprehensive hazardous waste program and asks that you limit the materials you bring on campus to those classified as non-toxic. The material must be in its original packaging. An environmental fee will be assessed for classes generating hazardous waste. In order to limit the hazardous waste generated in the studios, we cannot allow students to bring toxic materials outside of the class supply list into studios. If your class requires hazardous materials, they will need to be disposed of properly. A Hazardous Waste Disposal Fee will be charged in addition to the Studio & Materials Fee.

CLASSROOM LOCATION: The Fine Metals Studio is located in the Thunder Mountain Studio complex, approximately 1 ¾ miles from “Valley Central”.

SHARED WORKSPACE & EQUIPMENT: Shared air space/ music: Each class should discuss the playing of music and reach a consensus on the time of day, the volume, and the type of music to be played. Tolerance and consideration are expected from everyone.

STORAGE: Lockable storage space is not available at Peters Valley Craft Center. Please lock valuables in your car.

SAFETY INFO: Safety is of prime importance at Peters Valley Craft Center. Safety is discussed prior to every workshop beginning. No one may begin using the studio before this discussion is complete. Due to the nature of the equipment in the studio, no student may use any tool until he or she has been instructed in its use.

STUDIO SPECIFIC SAFETY INFO: The studio is equipped with an emergency eyewash station, sink, a first-aid kit, and a telephone. Students are encouraged to bring their own personal safety gear including gloves, safety glasses, face shields (when required) and dust masks.

DRESS CODE: Dress appropriately for your workshop. Closed toe shoes are always recommended. Do not wear clothing you do not want ruined due to chemicals and abrasives which may be used in your workshop.

ALCOHOL & DRUGS: Alcohol is not permitted while working in the studios. The use of illegal drugs at Peters Valley is prohibited. While you are at Peters Valley Craft Center, you are staying in a federal park, and rules and regulations of the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area also apply. (www.nps.gov/dewa)

CLEAN UP: Your time here will pass quickly. Classes begin (in most cases) on Friday mornings at 9am and will end in the afternoon on the last day of the workshop with the shop clean-up. Clean-up is part of the workshop experience. Please do not plan to work the last afternoon of the last day of class. Special arrangements should be made with the coordinator if you cannot participate in clean-up.
